I believe that one of the biggest factors with issues within the prisoner/correctional facilities is due to Budget Cuts, Overcrowding in the prisons, and lack of staff capable of handling inmates with Mental Health Issues. The biggest concerns with prisons/correctional facilities are that correctional officers are based on 1) Staff Safety, 2) Stress, 3) Corruption, within the facilities.
Staff Safety comes from the overcrowding of the prisons. Currently, the Bureau of Prisons is staffed at 87 percent, opposed to the 95% staffing levels in the mid 1990’s. There are also 4.9 inmates to 1 officer on duty.

- Solitary Confinement or Maximum Security Cells for Prisoners
- Death Row: Prisoners awaiting execution
- Administrative facility: Housing Prisoners suffering mental illness
- Retribution: The punishment goal by sentencing judge to get back at the offender and offer peace of mind to the victim (www.departmentofcorrectionsguide.com).
- Deterrence: A punishment given by judge as a tool to prevent others from committing similar crimes (www.departmentofcorrectionsguide.com)
- Rehabilitation: A punishment goal set to reform criminal offenders as a way of rehabilitation (drugs, alcohol, etc..). The ideal is to impact the offender in a positive manner (www.departmentofcorrectionsguide.com).
- Restoration: The punishment goal is to make the offender and the victims complete again. In most cases, the punishment consists of fines, restitution and community service. The purpose of prison is to help restore the inmate to refrain from past action (www.departmentofcorrectionsguide.com).
- Incapacitation: The goal is to prevent the offender from committing future offenses. In prison, the inmate can be held in either a cell block or in some cases, an open room with other inmates (www.departmentofcorrectionsguide.com).
